EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2010

Barcelona is above all a city that moves to the beat of sport. It has always been a place that is alive through and for sport and presently, due to the legacy left by the Olympic Games of 1992, at least a quarter of the population regularly practises some type of physical or sporting exercise.
Indeed it is the leading European city where people practise sport, and third on the global scale, in relation to the number of inhabitants.

Nearly 350 sporting events per year are held in the city, which bring together approximately 250,000 participants, and encompasses all types of sports people from the experienced to newcomers. At the same time the wide variety and cross section of participants demonstrates that Barcelona offers sport to everyone of different tastes and of all ages.

Within this expansive commitment to the different sporting activities and disciplines the city maintains a special link with athletics. Indeed this sport has been a direct tool of participation with the people of Barcelona. Through athletics the city has promoted fun runs that presently form key dates in the annual sporting calendar. Athletics in general has become the main sport, bringing together thousands of local and foreign athletes, professional and amateur.

In 2010, Barcelona will become the first city in Spain to host the European Athletics Championships. The event will be held on Montjuïc, recapturing the flavour of the 1992 Olympics. The top athletes from more than 50 European countries will compete again at Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium in the biggest athletics event to be held since the Games.
